The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning board of directors voted to ban public universities from forcing the COVID-19 vaccine.
Caron Blanton, the group’s communications director, said the vote took place Friday at an annual retreat, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.
The mandates of the medical centers for the vaccine will remain in effect, the board said.
“With the exception of clinical settings within institutions, centers, departments and programs, institutions are required to refrain from imposing COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of registration or employment,” indicates the motion.
The adoption of last week’s motion follows an August 27 meeting where the board voted against requiring public universities to mandate the vaccine.
The August vote caused confusion, however, with some schools believing it meant they could adopt their own demands, according to the PA.
Many public universities across the country have implemented vaccination mandates, with some schools deregistering students who do not comply.
Vaccination warrants became more common after full approval of the Pfizer vaccine by the Food and Drug Administration.
