A small number of Bob Dylan fans marked a valuable collector’s item on Sunday when a three-disc collection of songs cut in 1970, including the legendary George Harrison sessions, quietly went on sale via UK store Badlands.

This collection was released in response to a European law stipulating that recordings enter the public domain 50 years after their creation if they are not officially published by the copyright holder. To keep Bob Dylan’s legal bootlegs from flooding the market, his camp has issued annual copyright protection releases dating back to 2012, when the full 1962 recordings came out.
Many of them contain take after take of the same song and would interest no one but the most dedicated Dylan scholars, but they have become extremely valuable due to their rarity. They often sell in the resale market for over $ 1,000 each.
This new version probably has a wider appeal than the previous ones as it features the full May 1, 1970 session of Dylan and George Harrison where they casually play old Dylans like “One Too Many Mornings” and “It Ain’t Me. Babe “with Beatles'” Yesterday “and many songs from the current era New morning. It’s been circulated as a bootleg for years, but the sound quality on it is probably a significant upgrade from anything that has been heard before.
It is supplemented by other recordings of the New morning sessions where Dylan is joined by session pros like organist Al Kooper, bassist Charlie Daniels, drummer Russ Kunkel, guitarist David Bromberg, bassist Stu Woods and drummer Alvin Rogers.
The collection sold out in seconds, but will likely be available soon for enterprising fans familiar with the world of BitTorrent. And stay alert at the end of 2021 when the full sessions for Greatest Hits Volume 2 are likely to strike without notice. (Things will get really interesting in 2024 when they have to pull out every recording in Dylan’s vault. Before the flood tour with the band.)
