Boba Fett’s new melee weapon in The Mandalorian is something he picked up on Tatooine: a gaffi staff, traditionally used by Tusken Raiders.
Boba Fett uses a brutal new melee weapon in the latest episode of The Mandalorian: a gaderffii, or gaffi stick, which he obtained (possibly by violent means) from the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine. Although he only had a handful of lines and minimal screen time in the original Star Wars trilogy, Boba Fett has become a fan favorite character, and The Mandalorian season 2 gives it a spin in the spotlight.
The Mandalorian‘s Boba Fett is played by Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and also voiced Boba Fett in several video games and the 2004 redubbed edition of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Although Boba refers to Jango as his father when he explains the story of his armor to Mando, Boba is technically a clone of Jango who was raised as a son by the legendary bounty hunter. Boba Fett fell into a sarlacc pit on Tatooine in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, But The Mandalorian confirms that he survived (albeit with some scarring) and lived on Tatooine for several years afterward. In The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 6, “The Tragedy”, Boba follows Mando to Tython’s Jedi planet and demands that his armor be returned to him.

When stormtroopers attack, Boba Fett can show off his prowess with his new weapon, the Gaffi Staff. The Deadly War Club made its first appearance alongside the Tusken Raiders who wield it in Star Wars: A New Hope, and in fact has a coincidental connection to the peaceful past of actor Kiwi Temuera Morrison. The gaffi staff is based on a Fijian weapon called a totokia (pictured below), and Boba demonstrates just how effective the weapon’s spiked head can be, especially in combination with the sharp spear tip that has been added for the Star wars version of it.
As dangerous as it is in combat, the gaffi stick is also a versatile tool. Earlier in The Mandalorian Season 2, a Tusken Raider was seen using his gaffi stick to clean a bantha’s teeth. The Tusken Raiders live a harsh, minimalist life in the Tatooine Dune Sea, so it makes sense that their weapons could be used for more mundane tasks as well. Bandits living in the desert aren’t particularly friendly with strangers, so it’s likely that Boba picked up his gaffi staff from the corpse of a Tusken Raider after a fight – though it’s also possible that he was be temporarily allied with them during his time. on Tatooine, and kept a gaffi staff in memory of this alliance.
While there are still plenty of blaster battles, The Mandalorian Season 2 also took the opportunity to showcase the melee weapons of the Star Wars universe. There’s Moff Gideon’s black saber, Ahsoka Tano’s two white lightsabers, Mando’s new beskar steel spear, and now Boba Fett’s gaderffii. It’s a good way to keep the show’s fighting styles and choreography diverse, and a lot more interesting than just watching characters trade laser blasts.
