Bobby Ryan of the wings: “Excitement at an all time high”

“I feel great, happy with the way I reacted to my injury,” Ryan said. “Good news, I hope to join the guys. I’m just happy with the role they’re giving me.
Ryan had trained on a line with Robby Fabbri and Filip Zadina, but it’s unclear if coach Jeff Blashill will return to it immediately.
For now, Blashill is hoping Ryan’s return can trigger a Wings power play that didn’t look so strong Thursday against the Hurricanes.

“Our power play had to be better and that’s an area where we think it can really help,” Blashill said. “We’ll spot him five on five, hopefully that can get him to put his legs under him and once he’s gone he’s a guy who hopefully can give us more points. We believe he is in a good position to help us.
Ryan was on a power play unit with Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi and Danny DeKeyser during practice on Thursday.
Playing the position in front of the net, Ryan feels he can put sticks on the pucks and wreak havoc around the Hurricanes net.
“We got reps at camp and then I missed the scrums where you get real reps,” Ryan said. “It makes it a little harder to slip in. I can help them with the registrations, we weren’t really crisp (Thursday) but we were better this morning.
“If Bert and I continue to be the guys in goal, and Bert is going to put his stick on just about anything that goes, it can (create havoc) and then we can let the skill guys do what they want.” do on the outside. “

Ryan is also looking forward to donning the Wings jersey for the first time.
Ryan spoke about the nervous energy of any player playing for a new team and mentioned a discussion he had with new teammate Vladislav Namestnikov about Thursday’s game.
“He said he hadn’t remembered being so nervous in a while,” Ryan said. “It’s not lost on me that I’m wearing an Original Six jersey, so there’s a lot of history there and you want to do well.

Forwards Givani Smith and Michael Rasmussen, defenders Dennis Cholowski and Gusatv Lindstrom and goalkeepers Calvin Pickard and Kevin Boyle make up the Wings’ cab squad, waiting for a chance to play if necessary, given the unpredictability of directing a sports team during a pandemic.
The taxi team trains with the Wings daily – and often has a second session with coach Brandon Naurato – to stay tuned.
Blashill sees this as an opportunity for young players to improve and hone their skills.

Chances are some of the cab players will end up in Grand Rapids at the start of the AHL season and play a few games there. But until then, it’s a good opportunity to work hard to make it into the NHL.
