The Bonnaroo Music Festival, which was scheduled to start on Thursday, has been canceled, organizers said on Tuesday afternoon. The reason given was not related to Covid, but rather because of the heavy rains from Hurricane Ida which drenched the festival grounds in Manchester, Tennessee. Organizers have explained the situation in social media posts and have planned a rescheduled festival in June next year; full details are available on the Bonnaroo website.

The festival’s latest lineup included Foo Fighters, Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, Tame Impala, Tyler, the Creator and Rufus du Sol, along with dozens of other acts. Last month Janelle Monae and Lana Del Rey pulled out of the festival, but were replaced in the lineup by Khruangbin and Rufus du Sol.

“We are absolutely sorry to announce that we have to cancel Bonnaroo,” the post read in part. “Although the weather this weekend looks exceptional, Centeroo is currently inundated in many areas, the ground is incredibly saturated on our toll roads and the campgrounds are flooded to the point that we cannot drive or park. vehicles in complete safety. Like most music festivals, the long-running Bonnaroo was forced to cancel its 2020 edition; it originally scheduled 2021 for its usual early June time, but then moved the date to Labor Day weekend as concerts and festivals began to come alive in the spring. However, many have become nervous as cases of Covid have started to increase for touring – Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of Kiss have tested positive in recent days and tour dates have been postponed, as have many other artists – and Rain from Hurricane Ida proved the final straw for Bonnaroo.

While statistics are incomplete, some festivals, including Lollapalooza in Chicago and last weekend’s Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK, appear to have unfolded without major complications or massive Covid infections, although each one reported.

The Coachella Festival, North America’s largest, and its country music companion Stagecoach Festival, are both slated for April 2022 in Indio, California. Coachella tickets sold out almost instantly.
