The NCAA tournament knockout format creates plenty of emotional scenes in virtually every game, as losing teams face the reality that the season is over.

St. Bonaventure goaltender Jaren Holmes spoke eloquently about the topic while chatting about teammate and good friend Kyle Lofton, who was in tears following a 76-61 loss to LSU.

“The quote is like men don’t cry, but I believe real men cry,” said Holmes “Real men show emotion, and that’s the real demonstration of a man, the one who wears their heart on his sleeve, he does that every time he goes out on the court and every time he’s in the locker room with us.

“It’s a tough loss, but we’ll get better… and we’ll remember it for the rest of our lives, as we share this moment together. We’ll probably laugh about it in 20 years … the way we used to cry.

The loss came nearly three weeks after university president Dennis DePerro died from complications from COVID-19.

Michigan star Isaiah Livers wore a jersey with #NotNCAAProperty written on it during the opening of the seeded Wolverines’ NCAA tournament against Texas Southern.

The hashtag is part of a social media effort to raise awareness of inequalities in college sports.

Livers, with a foot injury, is one of the few leading Big Ten players to lead the movement. Players have been pushing for the NCAA to change rules that prohibit college athletes from making money for things like endorsements, sponsorship deals and personal appearances.

The National College Players Association released a statement on Wednesday detailing the players’ goals, which included meetings with NCAA President Mark Emmert and the opportunity to meet with lawmakers working to pass laws that could set the parameters rules of association on the image of the name or likeness.

Colorado forward Jabari Walker had peace of mind thanks to the wise advice of a longtime NBA player who happened to be his father.

Samaki Walker told her son to just go have fun.

It would certainly count as fun: Jabari Walker got 5 for 5 on a 3-point range and finished with 24 points as the fifth-seeded Buffaloes passed Georgetown 96-73.

“He called me and said, ‘I’m not going to fill your ear with nothing. Just tell yourself to play your game and play stress free, ”Walker said. “That’s what I went over there and did.”

Samaki Walker played for Louisville before embarking on a 10-year NBA career that included a championship with the 2002 Los Angeles Lakers.

More advice from dad: “He just told me it was a great platform, and not to come here with any pressure.” Just do what I’m supposed to do, play the game I’m playing. Nothing special. Do the little things like I always do and eventually everything will work out. “

Florida State progressed with a 64-54 victory over UNC Greensboro when it was only the eighth team since 2009 not to score a 3-runner in an NCAA tournament game.

The Seminoles missed all nine attempts beyond the arc. Before Saturday, the last team to fail a 3-pointer was Kentucky in their first-round victory over Davidson in 2018.

Teams are 5-3 since 2009 in NCAA games when they don’t make a 3-point. Kansas did it twice and won both games.

The last time Florida State didn’t touch perimeter in a game was a 2018 loss to North Carolina State.

Florida goalkeeper Tyree Appleby “looks fine, looks normal” after suffering a laceration to the head in the first round, but coach Mike White said it would be a play decision against Oral Roberts, 15th seed. series, Sunday in the southern region.

Appleby inadvertently took an elbow early in the second half as he played defense against Virginia Tech and ended up bleeding all over the field. He wobbled to the locker room and returned to the bench in overtime to watch the No.7 seeded Gators claim a 75-70 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The 6-foot-1 junior finished with six points and five rebounds in 22 minutes.

White said on Saturday that Appleby had a “happy smile on her face” and a bandage on her forehead.

White offered less information about suspended forward Omar Payne, who missed the NCAA opener due to an “internal situation.”

Payne was sent off from the SEC tournament quarterfinals early in the second period for a flagrant foul-2 against John Fulkerson of Tennessee. Fulkerson suffered a concussion and a broken face and did not play in Tennessee’s first-round loss to Oregon State.

White declined to comment on whether Payne’s suspension was related to Fulkerson’s nudge.

NCAA spokesman David Worlock said in a tweet that Colorado’s Jabari Walker is the 16th player in NCAA tournament history to shoot 100% from a distance of 3 points in a game while making at least five attempts. Walker was 5 of 5 at long distance in a 23-point first-round victory over Georgetown.

John Goldsberry of UNC Wilmington holds the record for most unsuccessful 3-point attempts in an NCAA tournament game. He passed all eight tries in a 75-73 loss to Maryland on March 21, 2003.

Georgetown’s end-of-season push is over. The fifth-seeded Colorado took command with 11 3-pointers in the first half to claim a 96-73 victory over the Hoyas in the Eastern Region.

Freshman Jabari Walker had a career-high 24 points to lead Colorado, which went 16 for 25 in the long run – or 64% – was 34 of 56 from the floor. Colorado also had 27 assists. D’Shawn Schwartz had 18 points and had four of his five 3s in the first half to put Colorado into cruise control.

Coached by former star Patrick Ewing, Georgetown made the March madness with a four-game winning streak in four days in the Big East tournament, but fell short of the Buffaloes.

The second full day of the NCAA tournament is underway. Georgetown began by kneeling during the national anthem.

The Hoyas locked arms and took a knee during “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of their opener against Colorado.

Coached by former star Patrick Ewing, Georgetown is a 12th seed after breaking the March craze with a four-game winning streak in four days at the Big East tournament.

No.1 seeds Gonzaga and Michigan will also be in action on Saturday.

Friday’s action featured three big upsets – won by No.12 Oregon State, No.13 North Texas and No.15 Oral Roberts. Two of the upset victims – Ohio State and Purdue – were Big Ten.
