A border patrol officer was shot and wounded on Friday night while he was conducting a traffic control near the Texas-Mexico border and another officer shot and killed the shooter, announced Saturday. authorities.

According to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), two officers at Brackettville Station and a representative of the Kinney County Sheriff intercepted a vehicle on Route 674 of the ranch.

A passenger of the vehicle fired on the agents, injuring one of them. The second officer fired back and hit the shooter, who was later declared dead on the scene. The driver of the vehicle was stopped.

CBP later identified the deceased passenger as a 25-year-old man and a US citizen. The driver was identified as a 32 year old woman, also a US citizen.

The officer who was shot was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later flown to a San Antonio hospital, according to CBP. Neither the second officer nor the sheriff's NCO were injured.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz tweeted Saturday night about the incident, saying, "Border patrol officers do their homework every day, despite the dangers, my prayers are with the officers involved and their families."

The FBI and the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, as well as the CBP Office of Professional Liability.

Brackettville is located about 115 miles west of San Antonio, near the southern border with Mexico. CBP's statement on the incident indicated that the area "is frequently used by smugglers to transport narcotic drugs and people from the border to San Antonio and other destinations".
