The Borderlands series is known for many things, and one of its most characteristic features is the impressive number of guns that players can find. With so many different weapons, you would expect them to have various effects and statistics to justify diversity, but they also have unique sounds that set them apart. In Borderlands 3, there seems to be many more gunshot sounds that players have seen in Borderlands 2.
Gearbox has been talking about gaming weapons to some extent in the past since the game was announced, and one of the game's sound designers recently called on Twitter to discuss the amount of work devoted to the gun's noises. The sound designer Joshua Davidson said that, in its current form, Borderlands 3 has a whopping 7,500 files for individual sounds pertaining only to weapons that are fired. Davidson compared that to Borderlands 2 which had only 300 at the time of its release, and the designer said they had not finished yet.
So here is….# Borderlands3 is currently sitting at just over 7,500 individual .wav files for gun shooting sounds.
For perspective, BL2 has shipped just over 300 .wav files to cover all guns and their manufacturers.
And yes, we still have not finished. Pan Pan! #GameAudio

The soundtracks and game ads have so far shown only guns-specific sounds, but you can expect to hear them much better next week when Gearbox unveils the first official gaming videos for Borderlands 3. Although it is not a firearm, Davidson shares a video on the creator's Twitter account that shows how the team recorded C4 that players will apparently find in the game.

With regard to gun sounds, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford had already mentioned the idea of adding an ASMR firearm to the game. This may be one of the many noises contained in the finished product.
Borderlands 3 The planned release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platforms is scheduled for September 13th.
