Boston Celtics 2021 NBA Free Agency Notes For Every Signing

[ad_1]

The Boston Celtics have been patient during the NBA’s free agency period this year. Their patience finally paid off when they signed playmaker Dennis Schroder to a one-year contract worth $ 5.9 million for the mid-level taxpayer exception. In this specific article, we’ll be giving our 2021 Boston Celtics the NBA free agency ratings.

Outside of Schroder, the Celtics were calm in free agency. Their only other moves were to sign Enes Kanter and add undrafted winger Sam Hauser via a two-way contract.

The Celtics were unable to hold back Evan Fournier, who set the club’s price and fled with the New York Knicks for a massive $ 78 million 4-year contract. However, Schroder’s addition at a bargain price makes NBA 2021 free agency a hit for the Celtics.

To give the team an overview of free agency, let’s turn to our Boston Celtics 2021 NBA Free Agency Notes.

Boston Celtics 2021 NBA Free Agency Ratings

Dennis schröder

Contract: 1 year, $ 5.9 million

Note: A

In March, Schroder turned down a 4-year, $ 84 million extension for the Los Angeles Lakers. Schroder spent the 2020-21 season with the Lakers, averaging 15.4 points with 5.8 assists and the start of his 61 games played.

In the end, Schroder overestimated his market and never offered anything close to the contract presented by the Lakers. With few long-term offers on the table for Schroder, the future 28-year-old has decided to join the Celtics on a one-year contract.

Schroder fills a major void in the formation of the Celtics. They needed a playmaker after trading Kemba Walker in a deal that won them Al Horford. Schroder is an above average defenseman and instantly slips in as Boston’s third best threat, behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

There is always a chance that Schroder will come off the bench. After all, he finished second for the NBA’s sixth man of the year in 2019-20 as a member of the Thunder. That decision will ultimately rest with head coach Ime Udoka, as former coach and current president of basketball operations Brad Stevens remains out of any roster decisions.

However, Boston would be better off playing Schroder next to Marcus Smart in the backcourt alongside the rest of the starters. Whether he starts or not, this deal is all about betting on himself, hoping to demonstrate this season why he should be given a lucrative long-term contract.

Stevens, meanwhile, managed to maintain financial flexibility for next summer, which would have heavily influenced this year’s free agency decisions.

While Schroder probably won’t be in Boston for the long haul, the deal is a major victory for the Celtics. The Celtics get a good player – who’s made around $ 15 million in each of his last four seasons – and pay him just under $ 6 million. From a purely financial standpoint, Schroder is the best signing (on paper) of the 2021 NBA offseason. And as a bonus, Schroder will be very motivated to prove his worth, which is good news for a Celtics team who seemed lifeless during times of last year’s disastrous campaign.

Its edges

Contract: 1 year, $ 2.7 million

Rating: B +

The Celtics have chosen to bring back center Enes Kanter. He played for the Celtics in 2019-20 after signing a two-year contract with the club but was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers last offseason.

Kanter brings a lot of energy, nearly unmatched offensive rebound skills, and a reliable source of instant points off the bench. The fact that the Celtics gave him a minimum veteran’s contract is another major positive. Additionally, Kanter is capable of posting big numbers when he has enough playing time, which he showed last year with the Trail Blazers.

However, Kanter is one of the worst defenders in the NBA. His struggles to keep the pick-and-roll are well documented.

Kanter was brought to Boston for reasons of depth to the center. Horford will likely start at five for the Celtics, but young center Rob Williams will be the first big off the bench and play a major role for the club next season. Williams has had big problems staying healthy in the past, however, and his injuries likely motivated the Celtics to bring Kanter back.

In short, signing a minimum-priced player who averaged a double-double last season is a win for the Celtics. If the Celtics manage to maintain their health, Kanter will only play sparingly. If they suffer from injury, he is equipped to deliver solid minutes.

Sam Hauser

Deal: two-part contract (terms unknown)

Category B-

The Celtics have signed a two-pronged contract with University of Virginia goaltender / forward Sam Hauser. It’s difficult to classify a player with a two-way contract, especially since he likely won’t see much time (if any) with the Celtics this season.

That said, Hauser is a great shooter. He had 50.3% of his shots on the field, including 41.7% on a 3-point field and 89.6% on the free throw line during his senior varsity season with the Cavaliers. The 23-year-old averaged 16 points and 6.8 assists per game. Hauser is said to have chosen the Celtics over other potential contenders and has the opportunity to prove himself in the NBA Summer League.
