DENVER – The Boston Red Sox selected Eastlake High (Calif.) Shortstop Marcelo Mayer with the fourth overall pick in the MLB Draft.
The Pirates drafted Louisville wide receiver Henry Davis with the No. 1 overall pick. Texas went with Vanderbilt’s ace Jack Leiter No. 2 overall. The Rangers chose high school pitcher Jackson Jobe No.3.
Mayer is a 6-foot-3, 188-pound player who strikes with his left hand. Most of the false drafts led him to become No. 1 in the overall Pirates standings.
He’s made 14 home runs and hit 0.392 (38 for 97) in 34 games with Eastlake High this season.
MLB Pipeline listed him as the # 1 global prospect entering the project. Athletic’s Keith Law ranked him # 1 on his Big Board.
According to his MLB Pipeline screening report, “He’s got average or better tools across the board, starting with a positive feeling of hitting the left side of the plate. He has an advanced approach and knowledge of the strike zone to go with elite stick-to-ball skills and a clean hit. Long and lean, he has a lot of raw power to grow taller, with some scouts seeing a similar offensive profile to Corey Seager if all is combined.
Law wrote: “He has a good swing with good balance and some extra power potential, and he’s also a potential 60 short defenseman.”
The Red Sox have only drafted in the top five three more times. They chose third overall in 1967 (Mike Garman), fourth overall in 1966 (Ken Brett) and fifth overall in 1965 (Billy Conigliaro).
“I think we all see this as a great opportunity,” Red Sox director of amateur scouting Paul Toboni said last week of fourth place overall. “I think we want to write a kid who really sets the tone for the rest of the minor leagues and possibly his teammates in the big leagues. It’s with his work ethic, with his competitiveness, his love for the game and just his general character. It’s not every year, it’s not every 10 years for us, you can access a talent like this, in this area of the draft.
