Scientists believe that they found and recovered fragments of a meteorite off the coast of Grays Harbor County on Monday.
"I'm cautiously optimistic, not ready to be definitive about it but the first look at the samples, it seems like we got what we came for," said Dr. Marc Fries, a dust conservator cosmic with NASA who was on the expedition. "All these little pieces seem to be of meteoritic origin."
Fries never thought that he would give a lecture on the elements on the bottom of the ocean. But after a meteor fell into the Pacific Ocean after illuminating the skies near the Washington coast on March 7, Fries' s focus was on. water.
Fries was part of a team of researchers who spent Monday researching alongside NASA researchers, NOAA scientists worked with the Ocean Exploration Trust on the mission of one day using two remote controls.

Fries will take samples back to NASA headquarters where he will determine if the pieces are indeed space.
He admits he's rooting "As a scientist, I want to be impartial, I want to be logical," Fries said. "At the same time, I look at these things saying," Yeah! It's great! "
Fries said that he's confirming that the fragments are meteorites, The pea-sized pieces will be sent to the Smithsonian Institute and could end up on the public display.
Monday's targeted meteorite search never occurred before Fries said that if the fragments are confirmed to be meteor, the discovery would be the first of its kind.
