Family Fun at the Perseids Party of the Community Observatory

The Community Observatory will host a Perseid festival for meteorite rain from 18:30 to 21:00. Saturday, August 11th.

This family-friendly event will feature sun-shadowing sessions, activities with the Powerhouse Science Museum, Aerojet Rocketdyne exhibits, interactive experiences with California State University, members of the physics club of Sacramento Hyperloop and a children's area with do-it-yourself crafts

Jim Hansen, Aerojet Rocketdyne designer / mechanical engineer, will talk about the work he's done on several projects, including the Orion project, DART and more. 7 pm

Guests should bring a blanket available under the stars and watch Perseide Meteor rain following the activities of the day. The meteor shower of Perseid is known for its fast and bright meteors. Each year in August, the Perseids appear as the Earth travels through the debris trails caused by the ancient Swift-Tuttle comet, which revolves around the sun every 133 years. When the Earth crosses these debris, particles of small particles hit the Earth's atmosphere and decay into lightning. These meteors seem to fly away from the constellation Perseus, hence the name Perseids.

The Community Observatory is located at 6699 Campus Drive in Placerville. The Cameron Park Rotary Club, Folsom Lake College and the Education Office of El Dorado County (EDCOE) are partnering to make these events possible.
