The moon could have been habitable once, scientists speculate

The Moon is not habitable today. It is covered with potentially killer dust and looks dry like a bone. But if it seems crazy to think, a new perspective arises: What if the moon was friendly to life?

Scientist Dirk Schulze-Makuch of TU Berlin and Ian Crawford of Birkbeck, University of London, speculate that it seems "scandalous", recent results show that the Moon is wetter than scientists previously thought – so maybe to be, once, she had the conditions of life.

They do not say it, of course. "Whether life ever arose on the moon, or was transported from elsewhere, is of course highly speculative and can only be tackled by a future aggressive program of lunar exploration," they write in the Article published in the journal Astrobiology. This period of habitability, if it actually occurred, could have happened just after the training of the Moon from a mbadive collision with the Earth 4.5 billion years ago. or 3.5 billion years ago, after a period of volcanism that may have resulted in a thin lunar atmosphere.

Such an atmosphere would have lasted perhaps tens of millions of years. Maybe the water existed on the Moon at this point. Maybe 10 million years were enough for a rudimentary life to evolve on the moon. Maybe earthly life traveled to the Moon on asteroids. Who knows …

The researchers point out that "habitability requires a lot more than the mere presence of a significant atmosphere and a liquid water". Such a requirement would be the presence of organic compounds. And of course there are not the same characteristics created by the water on the Moon that we see here on Earth or on Mars, like drainage cbads – although these have existed and have been eroded by small meteors and solar winds.
