The government is working on measures that will allow citizens to obtain pbadports and other official documents at post offices in the country, it was learned.
The latest developments are likely to relieve millions of people living in rural and marginalized areas, who are usually forced to move to towns and villages to obtain official documents such as identity cards.
Gift Machengete, managing director of Zimbabwe's Posts and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (Potraz), said the move would not only speed up the government's e-commerce project, but would also guarantee post offices remain responsive to the ever-changing needs of consumers.
"Potraz, in partnership with the government's designated postal operator, Zimpost, is working on a model post office project, in which post offices will be transformed to offer e-government and trade services. electronic under one roof.
"Instead of incurring transportation costs to the Office of the Registrar General, as part of the project, communities will be able to apply for pbadports, birth and death certificates, and other government services. in the postal counters, "he said.
This comes as fears abound over the natural death of the post office after a major decline in postal services.
Machengete noted that mail volumes are declining significantly every year in many countries. Postal services must therefore reinvent themselves and become multi-faceted information and dissemination companies adapted to the virtual age.
"As we move from the past to the future, Posts will continue to play an important role in our lives," he said at the commemoration of World Post Day in Mudzi on Friday.
"But it depends on how far they are able to move from the traditional postal sector to a more robust e-commerce business model, taking advantage of the vast geographical reach of the postal network," he said.
Zimpost CEO Moyo said the organization had taken note of developments around the technological disruptions and opportunities it presents. "Over the years, Zimpost has diversified its product portfolio from traditional parcel and mail processing to technology to meet the ever-changing customer needs," he said. .
In recent years, Zimpost has developed a variety of innovative value-added products and services to meet consumer needs, such as financial services, Zimpost shopping center, Post insurance, Postlife funeral program and information centers for communication.
"Zimpost plays an important role in the economy by allowing the financial inclusion of Zimbabweans from all walks of life," Moyo said.
