In a much needed boost for the besieged box office, overall revenue could rise 14% for the weekend.
Friday afternoon, many screenings of the new Disney animated photo Raya and the last dragon were sold at AMC 19th Street in Manhattan. Same goes for Searchlight’s specialty photo Nomadland.
The multiplex was among dozens of theaters across New York City – including the nation’s busiest theater, AMC Empire 25 in Times Square – which reopened on Friday after nearly a year of closure due of the pandemic.
With capacity capped at 25%, or 50 people – a restriction that makes it difficult to make a profit – New York is an important first step as the box office tries to recover (Los Angeles, the other bigger the country’s film market, is expected to follow soon). San Francisco theaters, another key market, are starting to reopen.
Hollywood studios and theater owners say consumers are increasingly comfortable returning to the movies, and Friday’s traffic in New York City has proven their point.
If early estimates hold, box office revenue for the weekend is expected to reach 14% from the previous weekend. Although the overall number is still low compared to other years, the outlook is improving.
Raya is expected to win the weekend with an opening of around $ 8 million. The animated film also debuts simultaneously on Disney + for $ 30, so some key theater channels are not playing the film, including Cinemark. It’s sounding the movie at the box office. Other passing chains include Harkins, Cinepolis and Cineplex.
Warner Bros. ‘ Tom and Jerry seems to follow with an estimated $ 6 million or more in his second weekend, a good performance.
New entry Chaos Walking is heading for $ 3.5 million to $ 4 million, while the specialty photo Boogie seems to debut at over a million dollars.
