It seems that Boston Bruins winger Brad Marchand is up to his old tricks.
Marchand is once again facing controversy for his latest antics, this time due to a low-end shot he delivered in the third period of Tuesday's third game in Columbus. While the Bruins were leading 2-1 late in the game and the puck was blocked by Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, Marchand could not help catching an unsuspecting foe.
After a whistle at 1:03 in the third period, Columbus defender Scott Harrington was on his knees just outside the crease when Marchand punched the back of his helmet. After knocking, Marchand immediately began to regain the Boston bench.
It was a dirty game, with which Marchand managed to get out of it, as the officials apparently missed it and no penalty was called. For that, Marchand is extremely lucky, knowing that the Bruins were only one goal and that they had been greatly outclassed by special teams throughout this series. (The winner of the Blue Jackets game in the third game was on the power play – one with a penalty from Marchand, nothing less.)
However, cameras filmed this incident, which was reportedly reviewed by the League's Player Safety Department after Tuesday's match. Relatively speaking, it was not the toughest or the most dangerous shot, but Marchand is a controversial player with a long track record and a long suspension. Many have wondered if the league would come back.
It seems that Marchand will escape the incident without punishment.
This will probably not please the Blue Jackets, who may be looking for justice themselves in Game 4. Columbus head coach John Tortorella was very restrained when asked about the incident after the match.
Anyway, the fact that Marchand pulls this kind of thing is not very attractive to the veteran winger, and it's worse when you consider the situation in which he was shot. The coaching staff is probably not happy with his willingness to potentially disadvantage his team late in a tight and decisive playoff game.
Marchand finished the regular season as the Bruins' top scorer with 100 points, but was whitened on the scoresheet in the first three games of the series. The Blue Jackets will lead Boston 2-1 and have a chance to push the Bruins to the brink of elimination with a home win at home this Thursday night.
