Announced in April, Guillermo del Toro is not only producing but also directing the upcoming thriller Nightmare Alley for Fox Searchlight, which had originally Leonardo DiCaprio in talks for star. But Variety is reporting today that Bradley Cooper is currently in talks to replace DiCaprio; we know for sure that DiCaprio has passed the project.

Variety notes, "Sources say that Cooper has recently received an offer and although it is not yet clear whether an agreement will be reached, both sides have engaged in talks."

Del Toro co-wrote the script with Kim Morgan.

The film is based on the 1947 film about a corrupt crook who teams up with a psychiatrist to get people to give them money.

Like the original, it is based on William Lindsay Gresham's novel.

J. Miles Dale produces alongside del Toro.
