Observations from the Mets spring training game Thursday:

Rapid explosion

Brandon Nimmo finished 2-for-2 with a home game lead for the Mets in their 8-4 demonstration victory over the Nationals in Port St. Lucia. Nimmo returned to central field after starting DH the day before.

Racing men

The Nationals were 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts against James McCann and the Mets relievers. Victor Robles finished with two of those flights.

Caught my attention

Former Mets boss Fred Wilpon watched the opening innings of the game from behind the plate. Wilpon, whose family sold the team to Steve Cohen in October, was at camp for the second time this spring.

Friday schedule

The Mets have a blank day on the schedule and the complex will be closed.
