The Los Angeles Chargers today agreed to terms with Brandon Staley as the 17th head coach in franchise history. Staley served as the 2020 defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams after spending three seasons as an outside linebacker coach for Denver (2019) and Chicago (2017-18). Staley’s introductory press conference will take place on Thursday, January 21, with more details to follow.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’ve known Brandon for five minutes or five years, what quickly becomes evident is the amount of energy and passion with which he approaches every moment,” said football operations president John Spanos. “The consistency of that enthusiasm is unique and most importantly, it boosts his ability to connect with people. His journey as a coach at this particular time is inspiring; if not for the persistence and determination in it all, so certainly for the spectacular results he has produced for the teams and the players he has coached. I know it’s a cliché but I know Brandon really can’t wait to get down to business. I also know we can’t not be more excited to have him as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. “

Staley has coached four Pro Bowlers, some of the NFL’s most dominant defensive players in recent memory – Khalil Mack in 2018, Von Miller in 2019 and Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey this season. Three of these players (Mack, Donald and Ramsey) were also recognized by The Associated Press as the first team All-Pro selections.

“It’s not just the fact that Brandon has a formidable footballing spirit that makes him the perfect head coach to lead our team forward,” said general manager Tom Telesco. “It’s because he excels in the ability to adapt, apply and effectively communicate his concepts to players. It’s clear that Brandon will not be overwhelmed, he is the football equivalent of a gym rat. and that has earned him universal respect from the players he has coached throughout his career. “

“It’s hard to put into words how excited I am to have the opportunity to be the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers,” said Staley. “While this is certainly a dream come true, it is also a dream that is just beginning. There’s a reason this was probably the most sought after job out there – from the property, to the fans, to the city, to the men in that locker room – it’s the complete package. I can’t thank the Spanos family and Tom Telesco enough for trusting us, and by the time everyone reads this quote in a press release, we’ll already be working hard to develop a program Chargers fans around the world can be. proud. “
