Los Angeles Chargers are set to hire Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley as their next head coach, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero from ESPN. The team confirmed the move Sunday night.
Staley, who has coached for the past 14 years, held positions for the Bears and Broncos before leading the NFL’s No.1 defense in 2020. This will be his first head coaching position.
Staley, 38, had been with the Rams for a year and had only coached in the NFL for three years after joining the Bears in 2017 from John Carroll University.
The defensive-minded coach has landed one of the most coveted coaching positions this offseason. Although the Chargers ended 2020 with a 7-9 record, there’s a lot to look forward to with rookie quarterback Justin Herbert.
Herbert, the alleged offensive rookie of the year, threw for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns in his first year in the NFL and will have a bright future ahead of him in one of the nation’s biggest markets.
Staley will have his work cut out on the defense, however. The Chargers had the 23rd defense in the NFL and without Aaron Donald or Jalen Ramsey in their ranks, the first-time head coach will have a lot to prove.
