A strange situation unfolded at the end of the Chargers’ win over the Browns on Sunday: Trailing 42-41, the Chargers had the first and the goal with 1:31 left and the Browns had no more. of time out, so the Chargers decided to just miss the time until they could hit the winning basket at the end of the time limit. Unfortunately, Chargers running back Austin Ekeler scored a touchdown he didn’t want to score.
It happened because the Browns defense dragged Ekeler into the end zone as he tried to stop at the 1-yard line. This gave the Chargers a 47-42 lead, but it also allowed the Browns to reclaim the ball with enough time to potentially lead down the field for their own touchdown. While the Chargers held on to win, Chargers coach Brandon Staley admitted things didn’t go as planned.
“It’s one of those situations where we asked him not to go into the end zone, and he did a great job stepping up and going before the end zone. The Browns grabbed him and brought him into the end zone, ”Staley said. “It’s a smart game on their part. Staley said he believed that once Ekeler tried to surrender, the game should have ended because Ekeler stopped his own forward progress. Staley admitted he didn’t realize the Browns could keep the game going by pushing Ekeler into the end zone.
“I have to get a decision there. That was my interpretation, you cannot be trained. You can see Austin is clearly trying to get off, ”Staley said. “I feel like I need to have an interpretation on this. I certainly didn’t want to go into that one.
Staley admitted that maybe he should have asked quarterback Justin Herbert to kneel down.
“We were trying to finish the ball game with no more time,” Staley said. “This is not how it happened.”
