Brandy and Monica reignite iconic feud by recreating the Boy Is Mine from his 40s 23 years later

Brandy gave us a bop for the ages in 1998, when she and Monica faced off on Mekhi Phifer.

And the Grammy winner has proven that even a pandemic can’t stop her from rehashing old rivalries.

She recently rekindled her iconic feud with Monica, as they recreated the 40s Boy Is Mine, lip-syncing the track’s memorable intro into a TikTok, 23 years after dropping the collaboration.

The 42-year-old wrote: ‘#duet with mondeenise loves you Mo It was fun. #theboyismine @syraismith brought me together. ‘

She recited the opening of the house in a chic black poncho and matching stetson, as Monica, 40, got comfortable in a monogrammed white dress to deliver her other half.

The social distancing recreation split screen invoked nostalgia for the original video, which had women on opposite sides of a wall harmonize.

It was the first single from the two artists’ second albums, Brandy’s Never Say Never and Monica’s The Boy Is Mine, which both earned them their first Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

The duo seem to be on good terms after a turbulent history as they recently reunited for a full song performance on DJ Verzuz’s virtual fight show in August.

Brandy said during the show that she had “ the greatest love and respect ” for Monica, adding: “ For someone starting at 12 … the longevity of your career, no one [knows] what you’ve been through.

The feeling was mutual, as Monica told her, “ The more we talk about it, the more difficult it becomes, needlessly. And I’m really, really a simple shooter and I really admire what you’ve done musically and what you’ve had to endure personally.

The couple had already reunited for another song in 2012, when they collaborated on It All Belongs to Me, appearing on Monica’s seventh studio album, New Life.

Brandy recently took another trip down memory lane, as Disney + began airing Rodgers & Hammerstein’s 1997 adaptation of Cinderella, posing as the titular princess and the late Whitney Houston as her fairy godmother.

She joined Whoopi Goldberg, Victor Garber, Bernadette Peters and the rest of the cast last week for a virtual reunion hosted by Entertainment Weekly.

The Mississippi-born actress / singer reflected on the importance of the film’s legacy, “ It was a game-changer, like it was so different, and it just gave everyone the chance to play these iconic characters, and see it in a different way. It was so magical.

Brandy also put her spin on the #CinderellaChallenge, slipping into TikTok’s iconic blue dress, with Todrick Hall as Prince Charming.
