Braves Option Orlando Arcia, Sean Newcomb

Acquisition deadline Richard rodriguez and Jorge soler are in Atlanta and active or at tonight’s tag team game. To make room for their arrival, Orlando arcie and Sean newcomb were optioned to Triple-A.

Arcia came from the Brewers’ midseason and had played mostly left field for the Braves – her first appearances on the field in the Majors except for a center game last season. Arcia doesn’t carry enough bat to hold the position long-term, however, and the Braves have added Soler, Eddie Rosario, and Adam duval with Pederson game in the corners of the outfield. Arcia only hit .204 / .264 / .347 in 53 appearances with the Braves.

Newcomb has had its ups and downs this season. Despite a 5.68 ERA, however, he has an FIP of 3.79 in 25 1/3 innings in the Majors with a career best strike rate of 27.3% and worst walk rate of 17. 4% in career. Because Newcomb has already been optioned this season, he’s an obvious candidate for demotion here, with only Edgar Santana as the only other real option in the veteran Braves’ enclosure.

Rodriguez has saved 14 games for the Pirates this season, but he was acquired to play a preparatory role in Atlanta. It’s a role Rodriguez knows well, having made just five career saves this season.

Using Soler will also be an issue to watch out for in Atlanta. The slugger does not offer much with the glove and therefore fits poorly as an everyday player in a National League club. He’s also struggled at the plate this season, having reduced just 0.192 / 0.288 / 0.370. That said, he is only two years away from leading the American League with 48 homers in 2019.
