The World Cup qualifying competition in South America continues on Friday, with Brazil facing Venezuela in Sao Paulo to complete the third round of matches.
Brazil enter a point behind Argentina, but with a game in hand, having opened with victories over Bolivia and Peru. Venezuela are at the bottom of the table with zero points after losses against Colombia and Paraguay. Brazil are 21-2-3 in all-time meetings between the two nations, last losing in a 2008 friendly. Brazil and Venezuela last met in of the 2019 Copa America group stage, which ended in a scoreless draw.

Brazil are concerned about injuries in the game. Neymar and striker Philippe Coutinho are set to miss the game with injury, as the status of Casemiro, Fabinho and Rodrigo Caio raises concerns. Defender Eder Militao has come out with COVID-19.
“When you have a team that plays several matches together and then you lose some games, there can be a lack of balance,” said Brazilian defender Thiago Silva. “But that’s no excuse, we have to show our mindset to prove our worth, to prove why we are playing for Brazil.”
On the positive side of the Brazilians, forward Gabriel Jesus and goalkeeper Alisson, who missed the first two playoffs with injuries, will return.
As the next World Cup qualifiers are not scheduled before March, the two teams will seek to gain positive momentum from the last two of the year. Brazil closes the window against Uruguay next week, while Venezuela host Chile.
