A federal judge of the US state of Illinois today ordered the immediate release of a nine-year-old Brazilian boy who had been separated from his mother in the United States after crossing the Mexican border.

According to the decision of the judge, who granted the injunction to the mother, the Brazilian Lidia Karine Souza, reunification of the family is still to be done today. Still according to the lawsuit, the mother illegally entered the United States, but has already served her entry-related sentence and was released on June 9. She is waiting for the outcome of an asylum application in the country.

The boy spent four weeks in a shelter in Chicago. On June 26, Karine's lawyer filed a warning against the separation of the family, a consequence of the zero tolerance policy promoted by US Attorney General Jeff Sessions since May.

The separation of families has occurred since the administration of US President Donald Trump set up a zero tolerance policy with illegal immigration in May this year. On June 20, after national and international pressure, the president signed an executive decree to suspend the separation of families, but it is not yet known how reunification will be done. According to reports, 51 Brazilian children were separated from their families during the period
