Despite partial removal of the bones of the sacrum and coccyx, located at the end of the spine, the team was able to preserve the patient's 66-year-old motion.
The multidisciplinary team of the State Oncology Control Center of Amazonas (FCECE), a unit linked to the State Secretariat for Health (SUSAM), carried out the last week, a very complex surgery for the treatment of a rare type of bone cancer: the chordoma, which occurs in the ratio of 1 case to one million people. Despite partial removal of the bones of the sacrum and coccyx, located at the end of the spine, near the pelvis, the team was able to retain the lower limb movements of the 66-year-old patient and to recover well.
FCEC orthopedic oncologist, Rodrigo Polo, explains that it was the eighth surgery for the treatment of this type of tumor, carried out in the institution, over the past 13 years. "The cure rate of our patients was 85%, an index higher than that described in the world literature," he said. The disease can affect children and adults, although it is more common after 45 years. The surgery, called partial sacrectomy, lasted six hours and occurred in two stages.
The first, with the abdominal opening, for the detachment of the tumor. The second, with access from behind, in the region of the coccyx, for withdrawal. The tumor, at the advanced stage, was nearly 15 centimeters long. The procedure was followed by the following doctors: Rodrigo Polo and Ubiratã Gomes (orthopedic surgeons), Daniel Lira (surgeon general) and Mirlane Cardoso (anesthesiologist).
Chordoma is a slow growing disease and difficult diagnosis, explained the specialist Indeed, it only exhibits symptoms in its most advanced phase and its location, in general, is in a difficult area of access .

"The majority of cases diagnosed in FCecon, bottom of the column.Because of the location, depending on the size of the tumor (staging), the patient may constipation (constipation) and recurrent pain in the spine, in addition to changes in the bladder. If the location of the tumor is close to the skull, neurological impairment may also occur. "
FCecon-treated patients did not present metastases when the disease spread through other organs. "However, the disease has a high degree of relapse (recurrence). Therefore, we advise our patients to have an annual follow-up with specialists, for about 10 years, so that the medical performance is faster, if secondary treatment is needed. "
Treatment
Polo points out that there is no prevention for this type of cancer because it is unclear what their risk factors are. In general, surgery is a curative procedure and the results are even better when the treatment is badociated with adjuvant radiotherapy (the one after the main treatment, in this case the surgical treatment). are offered free of charge by FCecon, a reference unit in oncology in the western Amazon.
