Brazil closed May with 235.5 million cell lines. The total was 6.7 million lower than that recorded in May last year. The data was published today (2) by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).
Of the total lines recorded in May, 144.15 million were paid in advance, representing 61% of the total number of lines recorded in May,. Over the one – year period, the decline in this type of access was larger, reaching 17.7 million. Meanwhile, in the same period, postpaid contracts increased by 11 million. That is, although the balance of the last twelve months has been negative, the proportion of postpaid access has increased in the country. In general, this modality is related to larger voice and data packets.
Anatel data show that 4G technology is established in the country. This mode was the most popular among the accesses, reaching nearly half of them (49%). After four years of implementation of this technology, 3G is still representative, used in 31.7% of accesses, while 2G is present in 12% of the lines.

Telefónica, is the market leader with 31.9% of accesses. Next are Claro (25%), TIM (24.25%) and Oi (16.5%). While Claro is consolidating the offer of Internet and Pay TV access through NET, Oi continues to seek the solution of its financial crisis.
In the state-owned coupe, São Paulo has 65.5 million lines. The state is followed by Minas Gerais (22.4 million), Rio de Janeiro (20.5 million). According to Anatel, over the last twelve months, the increase in cell line base has been higher in the northern states, such as Roraima (+ 4.5%) and Amazonas (3.65%).
