The finalists of the World Cup, France and Croatia enter the field this Sunday (15) in a duel that is the face of the historical diversity of Europe. On the one hand, the French team mixes players of various ethnic backgrounds. The Croats, who only gained independence 26 years ago, have a homogeneous team: all of Slavic origin.
The story explains. France colonized parts of Africa and the Middle East, mainly between the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. In addition, the French have up to now overseas territories on other continents. French Guiana, bordering Brazil, is one of them.

The French territory has mainly hosted immigrants from North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria) and Sub-Saharan Africa (countries such as Cameroon and Senegal).
The reasons vary. There are cases of economic immigration and cases of requests for political asylum or family reunification. After all, France, one of the largest economies in the world, would in theory offer greater opportunities to the inhabitants of the poorest countries. As this tide began decades ago, immigrants in the past gave birth to a new Frenchman. They were born on the territory of France and therefore have the local nationality.
Sometimes this generation of French children of immigrants has parents of different origins. This is the case of star Kylian Mbappé. He was born in Paris, his mother is of Algerian origin and his father was born in Cameroon.
There are still two cases of naturalization: Samuel Umtiti, a Cameroonian, and Steve Mandanda, a Congolese, have spun France like children.

The composition of the Croatian team shows an inverted path. If France adds players of ethnic origins from other parts of the world, Croatia joins athletes of the same ethnicity who have spread throughout Europe through history.
Case of Mateo Kovacic and Ivan Raktic, born respectively in Austria and Switzerland. There are also other athletes, such as Dejan Lovren and Vedran Corluka, born in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The difference is that they all have a family of Croatian ethnic origin. While France receives immigrants from former colonies or other poorer countries of Europe, Croatia has experienced an exodus throughout history precisely because of the two world wars and the independence war of the 1990s.
Captain of Croatia, Luka Modric, became a refugee in his own country. After the Serbian attack on Zadar, the hometown of the athlete, the player's family fled to an abandoned hotel in the region.
There are even Croats who have emigrated to France for both wars and for the economy.
Modric (Photo: Henry Romero / Reuters) The Croatian government estimates that there are about 40,000 Croats and descendants living on French soil.
This does not mean, however, that there is no immigration to Croatia. The migratory flow of the Syrian war has led the country, now part of the European Union, to receive refugees in recent years. Croatian territory is on the road asylum seekers arriving in the Mediterranean.
