KUALA LUMPUR – O
King Muhammad V
of the
Malaysia
resigned Sunday on the throne, causing surprise in the country, where a monarch had never abdicated before the end of his five-year term. The resignation came into effect immediately, said the National Palace in a statement, without explaining the reason for the decision. Authorities did not respond to requests for comment.
The decision comes less than a week after the king resumed his duties. He had been away for two months, supposedly for health reasons.
There are nine royal families in Malaysia, who take turns in the throne. The choice of the next king can be decided by a vote of the Council of Sovereigns, composed of all the royal families.
According to the palace's statement, Muhammad is grateful for the opportunity offered to him, thanking the Prime Minister and the government.
"His Highness has discharged the responsibilities entrusted to him as Head of State, serving as a pillar of stability, justice, foundation of the unity of the people ", the statement said.
The uncertainty surrounding the reign of the monarch, who ascended the throne in December 2016, has prevailed in recent weeks, since he was absent from public life in November. Rumor has it that he married a Russian model and a former Miss Moscow, although the royal palace has never confirmed this information.
