RIO – C is picking up the cell phone in his pocket and adjusting his pants as Isaac Soares, then 19, felt a lump in one of his testicles. Previously, friends had explained to him how he had lost weight and his justification was the heavy routine of military service and physical education clbad.
– The hump did not bother me. I went to the doctor and after the ultrasound, I could not tell if it was a tumor. Another review showed my Beta HCG (
Indicator indicating the possibility of cancer
) changed. It's scary. I started thinking that I did not want someone to touch me. The doctor has directed me very well and the fear has diminished – Isaac recalls at 29.
During the surgery, the on-site biopsy was inconclusive. The doctor indicated that removal of the testicle was the best option to confirm if it was a cancer and, if so, at what level:
In the middle of the operation itself, the doctor explained that I would put a prosthesis in place and that it would not affect my life. And that is really what happened. Then they saw that it was a cancer of the testis. I did not think I was young, active, with no family history, with this disease.
Mariane Fontes, a uro-oncologist at Oncoclínicas, says that this type of cancer is common exactly in the age bracket of Isaac and that the lack of knowledge about prevention techniques makes difficult early diagnosis.
– Women have a habit and a series of campaigns dealing with tactile examination. In men, there is no culture or similar campaign. It's an easy cancer to heal, but with taboos on its prevention – says the doctor.
The case of Isaac was not so simple. One month after the operation, he was out of breath and found that he was already lung metastasizing. He was imprisoned in a university, left Vitoria da Conquista for treatment and saw his hair and beard fall.
– I felt life going in there. Then came the healing, almost like a miracle, and it was an internal growth. This year is ten years of diagnosis. Today, I have a degree in Physical Education with a specialization in Oncology. I have continued to campaign against the taboo of taking. We must break this barrier, "said Isaac.
Chronic Disease
This is not just what type of cancer that resists prevention techniques in humans. If the testicle directly affects a younger part of the population, the prostate has a rate of presence in 83% of men over 70 years. And the tactile examination continues to be viewed with prejudice.
– Many men have the idea of "I am going to be raped". Awareness must go through the benefits. The examination is very important. Today, we can treat prostate cancer as a chronic disease. You live with it and you can live well. I have patients with 20 years of illness and a normal life – reports Mariane.
It is with this thought that 73-year-old Newton Anielo has not suffered any prejudice with regard to the exam since his 50th birthday. Thus, during the diagnosis of the disease, he was able to treat it at an early stage.
– Prevention is very important. I've always had this concern because my father died of prostate cancer. I have never had this taboo to take. I have an example of friends who refused to do it. Some are dead, others undergo delicate treatments. Suffering indeed. It's better to take care of your health than to die. The doctor is not an animal. You have to face the disease with pride, "he says.
The risks are minor
Dr. Mariane Fontes stresses that today, the treatment procedures are less invasive:
– Every day we have new techniques of prostate surgery and testicles that reduce the risk of impotence and infections – he says. "The word cancer still scares people too much, it's understood as equal to death, you can not see the disease that way anymore.
After two years of treatment, Newton agrees with the doctor and says that prevention makes him think of living much longer.
– Prevention is health. I'm talking to friends, to the youngest ones. I reached the age of 73 by warning me. And I can go much further – he says, pointing out that the treatment has allowed him to continue to look after his two children and three grandchildren.
