Italy has performed for the first time in the world a surgical procedure in the heart of a patient with progeria, also called early aging syndrome.
Successfully completed, the operation was carried out on Sammy Bbado, 23, originally from Veneto, at San Camilo Hospital in Rome about a week ago. The procedure was conducted by cardiac surgeon Francesco Musumeci
According to the medical team, the patient is in "excellent condition" and will leave the hospital on Tuesday (5).
The Italian had to undergo surgery to treat a calcified stenosis of the aortic valve. The procedure, which is generally practiced in older patients, presented many risks because of Sammy's physical condition, besides the fact that she had small arteries.
"We got a result that seemed almost impossible and that opens a new perspective for the treatment of this disease," said Musumeci.
The doctor then explained that this operation was the first in a patient aged 23, but whose clinical conditions were an octogenarian.
"Research on this disease was based on drugs to slow down aging, but when symptoms began to manifest, that was the end," Sammy explained, noting that he was aware that his heart could have stopped at any moment. Although he was born in 1995, Sammy seems to be 80 years old and weighing just over 15 kg. He is founder of the Italian Association of Progeria and, thanks to this institution, has managed to spread his disease to millions of people around the world.
