Nicknamed "General Motors is accelerating the transformation", the restructuring program designed by GM to be implemented in the coming years is expected to result in heavy staff cuts in North America. Last December, the company laid off about 1,500 employees in the United States and is now announcing the closure of at least 4,000 additional workers. Jobs are being phased out mainly in the tech centers of Michigan, Arizona, Texas and Georgia, and they should not stop there. In total, it is expected that about 15,000 jobs will be removed and at the closure of about five factories.
Another wave of layoffs is expected over the next two weeks, with consequences for Canadian officials. Plants that will be closed include units located in Ontario (Canada), Detroit, Ohio, Maryland and Michigan. GM's plan is to shut down and concentrate 75% of global production on just five different platforms.
In addition to reducing staffing, the restructuring program provides for a 25% reduction in the number of executives who are unprofitable and agile in decision-making processes.
