The Senate corregidor, Roberto Rocha (PSDB-MA), informed Friday (8) that he had received the TV Senado images and plenary cameras referring to the session last Saturday (2) so to determine the suspicion of fraud in the election of the Speaker of the House.
Last weekend, senators met in plenary to elect the new Speaker of the House. There were 82 votes in the ballot box – there are 81 parliamentarians.
With this, a new vote was held and Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AL) was elected Speaker of the Senate. The ballot papers for the first ballot were crushed.
According to Roberto Rocha, these are "hundreds of hours" of images that will be tested.
"There have been hundreds of hours filming many cameras this Saturday, we are investigating, we are looking at all the pictures, all the voting times of the 81 senators," he said.
The corregidor also stated that the people who sat on the plenary council during the vote would finally be heard "in order to present the population with a satisfactory answer to this pitiful scene".
According to Senate Speaker Dai Alcolumbre, Brazilians "are waiting for an answer" from the House about this episode. He also said the ballot with 82 ballots was "a sign of discredit for politics".
At the Saturday meeting, senators should record the vote on the ballot, insert it into an envelope, and then drop it in an urn.
At the time of the verification of the votes, it was verified that there were 80 envelopes, each with one vote, and two ballots, with one vote each, outside the envelopes.
Images from TV Globo showed that the two votes of envelopes were for Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL). Renan abandoned his candidacy in the second round of voting on Saturday.
Following Saturday's session, the Senate's elected president, David Alcolumbre, said it would determine the opening of an investigation into the alleged fraud. The parliamentarian of Amapá said that it would be up to Roberto Rocha, as corregedor, to verify the facts.
Saturday's session was chaired by José Maranhão (MDB-PB). At his side, Senator Fernando Bezerra Coelho (MDB-PE) was at the table. Both helped the voting process.
There was also a group of tellers appointed by the parties to do the same. It is this group of parliamentarians who decided to resume the vote.
