The German government informed Brazil this week that the man sentenced to 14 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend in the Federal District in 1987 is in prison. Marcelo Bauer fled to Europe after the crime, 31 years ago, and was considered a fugitive.

The murder took place in July 1987 ( see details below ), but Bauer escaped after the denunciation of the charge and obtained European citizenship. With this he avoided extradition to Brazil for the execution of the sentence.

The victim, Thais Muniz Mendonca, was a student of letters at the University of Brasilia (UnB). According to the expertise made at the time, the body exhibited choking marks, stab wounds, and gun piercing.

According to the German statement issued by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office on Friday, Marcelo Bauer has been serving his sentence since 25 April this year at Bayreuth Penitentiary Center in northern Bavaria.

It is expected that he will be released only on April 24, 2032, the date on which the 14 years of imprisonment expire.

In Germany, the prisoner will fulfill the same sentence as that defined by the Brazilian courts. In 2012, Bauer was sentenced, by default, to 18 years by the Court of Justice DF. After appeal, the sentence was reduced to 14 years in prison.

In 2014, the defense of the Brazilian came to trigger the Federal Supreme Court (STF) alleging an interference with the right of defense. Rapporteur of the case, the Minister Celso de Mello rejected the appeal.

The crime occurred in July 1987. Thais, then 19, was last seen leaving clbad at UnB. She never came home.

His body was found by firefighters two days later, in a thicket near 415 North, with 19 stab wounds in his neck and a bullet in his head. The expert pointed out that she was also suffocated by a toxic substance.

The main suspect in the crime, Bauer ordered pre-trial detention shortly thereafter. According to the Attorney General's Office (PGR), he fled Brazil with the help of his father, a colonel who worked in the intelligence services of the military police.

The suspect was found only 13 years later, in 2000, in Arhus (Denmark). At that time, Bauer spent eight months imprisoned by Interpol – he was found with fake pbadports, issued in the name of "Sinval Davi Mendes".

The Ministry of Justice asked Denmark to extradite Bauer to Brazil, but he again fled to Germany, where he applied for – and obtained – citizenship. Since 2002, according to the MPF, he lived in Flensburg, in northern Germany.

Negotiations between Brazil and Germany for the punishment of Marcelo Bauer began in 2011, even before the first sentence. Since then, the judicial organs of both countries have shared evidence, and even DNA samples.

The sentence pbaded in Brazil was sent to the German court for approval and execution, but the delay in the bureaucratic process disturbed Brazilian organizations. In May 2016, the Attorney General's office asked, for the second time, that Germany apprehend Bauer.
