Visceral leishmaniasis is a serious public health problem and dogs are considered the main host and source of infection for the vectors of the disease. To protect humans and animals, the city of Florianopolis, through the Zoonoses Control Center, is hunting for the leishmaniasis-transmitting insect. The collar also helps control ticks and fleas.
According to the mayor of the capital, the action began in March this year, when 2500 pbades were acquired. Since then, they are placed in all dogs in areas that had recorded human disease in Florianópolis, as in the neighborhoods of Saco dos Limões, Pantbad and Rio Tavares.

The dog of Pantbad neighborhood resident Gisele dos Santos Alves received the necklace 15 days ago. With three children at home, she reports that she feels safer. "We live in a place near a forest and there are a lot of dogs living here, so the leash makes me calmer, because I know I protect our dog, our family and our neighbors", was -he says. 289 in the Saco dos Limões, 74 in the Pantbad and 30 in the river Tavares. The director of the Zoonoses Control Center, André Grippa, reported that "it is expected that about 4,000 dogs will be attached to the collar." The excess material is used on animals from other parts of the city.
Disease
Visceral leishmaniasis is transmitted to humans by the bite of the insect vector Lutzomyia longipalpis or mosquito-straw, the disease is characterized mainly by a long-term fever, hypertrophy of the liver and spleen, weight loss, weakness, decreased muscle strength and anemia. Dogs are considered the main host of vectors and sources of infection.
