The yellow July campaign began on Monday (16) in the Basic Health Units (UBS) and Family Health Units (Usafas) in Guarujá. The initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis.
Actions in the municipality continue until the 31st, with lectures, tests, guidelines, among other activities. World Viral Hepatitis Day is July 28th, the date set by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2010.
According to the Coordinator of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), AIDS / hepatitis from the Municipal Secretariat Márcia Helena Rodrigues, "the purpose of the mayor is to step up, mainly testing for hepatitis C because it is a silent disease and has a cure."
The Yellow July Campaign is a proposal of the State Program of Viral Hepatitis of the Epidemiological Surveillance Center (CVE) of the Department of Health Control (CCD) of the Department of State Health ( SES) – SP and includes the intensification of tests for hepatitis C, focusing on those over the age of 40 years. The biggest challenge, especially in this population, is the diagnosis of the disease.
Only 4000 tests were performed in the city last year (rapid test for all hepatitis). This year, up to now, more than 700 tests have already been done. For the serological test (anti-HCV), the total in 2017 was greater than 13,000.
According to state program data, it is estimated that about 71 million people are infected by the hepatitis C virus around the world and that nearly 400 thousand die each year, due to complications due to the disease.
The Ministry of Health points out that 0.7% of the population between 15 and 69 years old in Brazil has been in contact with the hepatitis C virus, which corresponds to about 1 million people. Thus, it is estimated that about 700,000 people have the disease and need follow-up and treatment.
