Brazilian exports of orange juice finished the 2017/2018 harvest year with an increase of 29%. Data comes from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), compiled by the National Association of Citrus Fruit Juice Exporters (CitrusBR).
Between July 2017 and June 2018, volumes shipped totaled 1,150,714 tonnes of frozen orange juice equivalent to 66 degrees Brix (FCOJ equivalent) compared to 894,669 tonnes exported in 2016/17. The Brix scale is used in the food industry to measure the approximate amount of sugars in fruit juices, wine and the sugar industry. The data is converted to 66 degrees brix to allow comparison between different products.
Exports totaled US $ 2.107 trillion, up 30 percent from the previous period's US $ 1.62 billion. "The situation has helped the industry, but the increase in shipments to the United States is a highlight," says Ibiapaba Netto, executive director of CitrusBR
United States
The United States grew 83% over the previous harvest. According to the director, two factors were decisive for the result.
"The first is that the US market has suffered from the effects of Hurricane Irma, which has hindered local production. The second is that during the previous harvest, Brazil exported less because of the restriction of the supply caused by the 2016/17 harvest, which was very low, "says Netto.
The volume represents the largest result of the historical series, so shipments to the United States have ended the harvest at US $ 561.7 million, 77% more than the US $ 317.5 million recorded in the 2016/17 harvest.
But the result should not be repeated in the next harvest, explains the executive director of CitrusBR. "Hardly these two factors are repeated. This year, we already know that the harvest is lower than last year, we will have a smaller fruit availability, and there is no guarantee that the United States will shoot with the same volume of last year . For these reasons, we do not believe that we will have the same increase performance as last year.
Other Markets
Shipments to the European Union, the main market for the Brazilian orange rose to 675,070 thousand tons, or 16% more than the 579,556 thousand tonnes shipped in the same period of the previous harvest, Secex's reported financial volume increased by 18% over the period, total shipments reached $ 1.23 billion US against US $ 1.05 billion in the previous harvest. "But if we compare with the 2015/16 harvest, we see a 9.75% drop in volume, which is worrying," says Netto. [19659002] Japan, Asia's top destination, maintained a growth in shipments with a total of 54,635 tonnes, up 33% from 40,996 tonnes in the previous crop. 52% with 105.7 million US dollars, while China observed a 33% increase in exported juice volume with 39,372 tonnes and a 46% increase in value, totaling US $ 79.9 million.

He explained that the decrease in consumption is one of those problems. "Global consumption of juice d & Orange has dropped 18% over the last 14 years, mainly due to competition with other drinks and changes in consumption patterns, such as breakfast. is better placed. The juice loses space because every day people eat less breakfast. These two conjunctures form a structural problem which is the fall in consumption that we have to face. "
In an effort to turn the tide, the entity has been campaigning in Europe for the past seven years with an investment of US $ 7 million a year," says Netto. orange juice in 14 markets in Europe and aims to talk to health professionals to bring information about the benefits of juice.
