Scientists detect "ghost particles" in deep space

For the first time in history, science has been able to capture neutrinos from deep space. Neutrinos are also known as "ghost particles" because they can travel through any medium, leaving no trace – which makes their detection extremely complicated.

The detected particle traversed the space for millions of light years until it reached the Earth, and such detection was possible thanks to a tool called IceCube – a one kilometer-meter ice cube located about 2500 meters below the Antarctic surface, which is part of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The device was equipped with more than 5,000 detection tubes, thus building a mbadive detector that was waiting for a neutrino in deep space hitting the instrument.

The discovery confirms that powerful sources of energy in space produce neutrinos, which are a key tool in understanding the phenomena of the universe that are still a bit mysterious to us.
