GE9X photos show the huge size of the engine
Boeing is about to launch its biggest plane next month, and the 777X was finally equipped with the giant GE9X engine
The aircraft is currently in Boeing's badembly plant in Everett, Washington, where images show that it hovers above the workers while he prepares his maiden flight.
The GE9X engine is the largest jet engine in the world. The Boeing 737, which is approximately the size of a full body, underwent flight tests last March when a single turbine was coupled to a 747 test.
The engine includes a fan composed of more than 11 feet diameter, built into a capsule or a 14-foot engine nacelle. It has 16 composite fan blades and rests on the 777X's 24-meter wings, making this new aircraft the world's largest two-engine aircraft.
Although larger engines could potentially result in higher fuel consumption and costs, Boeing's largest aircraft is designed to alleviate these concerns: larger wings will generate more lift, which will reduce fuel consumption 20%, said the company.
Although the GE9X is the biggest engine in the world, it is not the most powerful powerful. Another General Electric machine, the GE90, can claim this title since it had already reached 127,900 pounds of thrust in 2002. In comparison, the GE9X generates 105,000 pounds of thrust.
The nearly ready aircraft is the culmination of more than a year of extensive testing with GE9X deployed in Winnipeg (Canada) and Peebles (Ohio). More than 700 huge engines have been put in order since last year, as the jet approaches its arrival at an airport near you.
