The measles epidemic has also hit the Indians. On Friday 13th, 67 cases of the disease were confirmed in the Yanomami group, on the Brazilian-Venezuelan border.
According to the Yanomami and Iekuana (Dsei-Y) indigenous health district, 90% of the cases were confirmed.
The first case of Yanomami disease was diagnosed in March. Since then, the indices have increased. Of the affected group, 59 were Venezuelan Indians and seven Brazilian. The epidemic is concentrated in 11 villages – including five in Venezuela
Indians are among the 200 confirmed cases of the disease in the state of Roraima. A native Yanomami Brazilian has already died of measles.
Rousseau de Jesus Oliveira, coordinator of Dsei-Y, explains that the growing number of patients is linked to the low vaccination rate in Venezuela. Every day, many people leave the country and cross the border with Brazil for food, work and medical care.
Among Brazilian Indians, vaccine coverage reached 80% of the population. According to Manoel Pereira Filho, the technician responsible for Dse-Y vaccination, the proliferation of the highly contagious virus is easier in the villages because people live in built-up areas.
Manoel explained that he is already vaccinating Venezuelans and Brazilians,
