The hospital of Unicamp Clinics, in Campinas (SP), has a line of 1,500 people for bariatric surgery. The center, for care and procedures of great complexity, is the only one in the region to offer operation to obese patients. The wait can reach five years.
The surgeries are performed by the Unified Health System (SUS) and meet the limits of the structure offered by the HC. This is why, since 2016, Unicamp has not organized a registration date that has attracted up to 3,000 people from all over Brazil, according to a gastro-surgeon and chef of the ### 39; obstetrics and gynecology unit of Unicamp 20 years ago, Elinton Adami Chaim.
"We try to increase the number of surgeries, but we encounter hospital beds, hours of surgery, hospital capacity, the hospital has limited capacity and we work with maximum. […] In the last ten years we have quadrupled the volume [no HC]"he explains.
Even with the goal of winding up the queue, the HC receives at least five new cases sent through the public health network and five more from the hospital's internal demand. The team has four doctors and performs an average of 20 surgeries per month.
"There is an obesity that is morbid and the patient is clinically controlled, and he is at risk for heart attack, death, and must prioritize," says Chaim.

The Sumaré Public Hospital ( State of São Paulo), also from Unicamp, has been performing these surgeries for years, but has not followed the procedure. With a new administration since the beginning of the year, the l & # 39; unit is studying the possibility of resuming operations to reduce the queue but still unforeseen.
"The Sumaré Hospital existed four or five years ago, I did it weekly with the entire team here [do HC].
The Way to Get On The Line.
Since 2016, schedules have been established through the Regional Department of Health (DRS) .A person with obesity is looking for a unit in the public network, currently undergoing treatment. evaluation and, if there is an indication of surgery, she is referred to the DRS, which marks the procedure directly in the HC of Unicamp
Despite the regionalization, Chaim says that many patients continue to come from other parts of Brazil to queue.According to the long wait, the surgeon concludes that many end up entering more than one row in hospitals across the country
"The patient is in several queues, in various services. It is very difficult to know how long it will take. I think it would be a period of less than five years, but if you stop catching new cases.

Atua The HC prepares an average of 200 to 250 patients for future surgeries. In weekly meetings, they follow up with a multidisciplinary team – doctor, psychologist, nutritionist, nurse – and control of weight loss.
"[Perda de] about 10% to reduce the complications and risks of surgery, and even shows the patient's commitment to diet, physical activity, to change lifestyle, which is the most important "explains.
In order to reduce the number of obese people, we also work with the people closest to the residents.
"With all the obese who go to surgery, we work with loved ones to know the conditions and guide the family on diet and physical activity, the need to change life, to avoid new patients in the future, "says Chaim.
According to the State Department of Health of São Paulo, in the last ten years – between 2008 and 2017 – bariatric surgeries performed by SUS increased by 48.5%. More than 14,900 procedures were practiced in the state, of which only 1,600 in 2017. Women are the majority, about 80%.
A study published this month by the Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (SBCBM), with data from Datasus and the Hospital Information System, shows a 215% increase in the number of these interventions in Brazil. It was 3,195 in 2008, compared to 10,064 in 2017.
"What we do know is that obesity has increased and the treatment that has the best long-term outcome is surgical treatment, but he has no treatment, he has control .. will not solve if it does not change the lifestyle, food, physical activity, "says the doctor of HC
L & # 39; obesity affects 18.9% of Brazilians, according to research on risk factor surveillance and "It's a commitment that must be a health policy to start working with children and the population in general ", warns Mr. Chaim
In Campinas, according to the town hall, in the 64 health centers, there are discussion groups on the healthy nutrition There are also groups on chronic diseases such as hypertension who treat the issue of obesity. To participate, just search The units
