Last August, Guilherme Pagnoncelli, 28, discovered that cancer, born in the stomach, had progressed and reached other organs. The young man was informed that he would have little time to live. As soon as he left the hospital, he posted videos on his Instagram regarding the diagnosis. A little over 4,000 people accompanied him on the social network. In less than 24 hours after the report, his profile exceeds the bar of 260,000 followers.
Gui, as he is known on social networks, discovered the disease in July 2012, at the age of 22 years. He has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, type adenocarcinoma, one of the rarest and most aggressive forms. The young man underwent surgeries and chemotherapy sessions. Months after completing the procedures, found that the cancer had also reached the lungs.
In 2016, still under treatment, doctors reported that the young man's esophagus had also been attacked by the disease. In August 2017, Bill learned that treatments no longer produced the desired results. "They said I would only have a few months to live," he says.
The boy, who until then had the habit of being discreet about the disease, spoke openly about the subject. "When I left the doctor 's office, in the heat of the moment, I recorded a few stories (a little video tool and Instagram photos) telling what I had come up with. learn.
The repercussion of history led the boy to make several publications on the disease, its treatment and its daily life. "I believe that it is necessary to spread the disease so that people can take care of themselves." The cancer is silent and it is necessary to talk about it. a greater intention is to alert, "he told BBC News Brazil.
The boy is one of many young people who face cancer and share the fight against the disease in social networks. Diagnostic and treatment reports have become commonplace on the Internet.
For the head of the psychology section of the National Cancer Institute (Inca), Monica Marchese, interaction in social networks makes that young people with the disease feel less lonely.
"They feel that they are doing something with this moment of life, they are out of a pbadive position in the face of the illness and the losses that it entails, so it has become commonplace for young people to create networks, blogs, so they are not just hostages of diseases and treatments. "
According to the Inca, there is no data on young people facing to cancer in Brazil, just an estimate of the number of Brazilians in general who must be diagnosed this year: 600 000, about 170 000 cases related to skin cancer. The badysis does not specify the age of the patients.
Social networks as "escape valve"
The most famous case among young people who shared the fight against cancer in networks is the model Nara Almeida, 24 years old.
For nine months, she fought hard against stomach cancer. Before, she published beauty tips, recorded trainings at the gym and talked about diets. The girl had about 400,000 followers on Instagram. After the diagnosis and reports on the fight against the disease, the number of people who accompanied it reached 4.4 million, recorded in May.
For the young woman, social networks were the way she had found better management of diseases and treatments. In her profile, she celebrated every improvement in her condition and regretted that her health was deteriorating. "God, once again hold my hand, my afflicted soul is asking for your attention, I have reached the most difficult level here.Help me to conclude," writes Nara in one of his latest publications, made shortly before start of immunotherapy treatment.
Nara died May 21. He did not resist the complications of the disease and the available treatments did not have any other effects.
The engineer Pedro Rocha, her husband, said that social networks were fundamental during her fight against cancer. "Nara used the nets as an escape valve, she could evacuate, meet people who had the same problem, ask for help and help other people, she also used this means of communication to not feel alone when she could not leave, "he says.
Through social networks, footballer Alexandre Pato, currently in Tianjin Quanjian, met the Nara affair. At the end of April, he volunteered to pay six months of immunotherapy for the young woman. Before the help of the player, the model even recorded a video asking that she be hired to work as a digital influencer, so that she could afford the drugs – which cost 18 $ 000 per dose, to be taken every 21 days. "She had time to take only two doses (paid for by Pato)," says Rocha.
In addition to messages of support, Nara was also criticized for exposing the disease. "All those who choose to open their lives in a social network must be able to handle rejection and different opinions, but it's important to know when to book a little," says Nara's husband.
The engineer believes that the model could help other people. "Nara has shown that it's not necessary to be ashamed to go through such a situation because this disease is more common than we would like I've met a lot of people who are went to know more about their health after knowing its history. "
Social networks are considered important tools for Gui Pagnoncelli. Through a "virtual chat," he raised $ 350,000 to perform a multi-organ transplant in the United States – stomach, intestine, pancreas and liver.
While he was dealing with sickness and sharing daily life in the nets, he struggled to maintain the plans he had for himself. One of the dreams was realized at the end of last year: the conclusion of the faculty of physiotherapy. Gui started the course shortly after completing the first phase of cancer treatment. "At times, I could not imagine finishing my degree, my CBT was prepared between chemotherapy and another.
