BREAKDOWN: Disney to lay off 4,000 other cast members, bringing total to 32,000

On the eve of Thanksgiving, the news is that The Walt Disney Company plans to let go of 4,000 more cast members, as the company’s 10-K file reveals.

According to Variety, Disney revealed an updated figure that includes around 4,000 additional layoffs, bringing the total since September to 32,000. While the initial 28,000 layoffs only impacted Disney National Parks, that figure is slightly more vague, affecting employees in the general Fleets, Experiences and Products segment. The layoffs are expected to take effect by March.

The following statement was included in the SEC filing:

“Due to the current climate, including the impacts of COVID-19 and the changing environment in which we operate, the Company has generated efficiency gains in its staffing, including limiting hiring to roles critical sales, time off and downsizing. As part of these actions, the employment of around 32,000 employees, mainly at Parks, Experiences and Products, will end in the first half of fiscal 2021. ”

A Disney spokesperson confirmed to Variety that the 32,000 figure includes previously announced park layoffs. Separately, 37,000 Disney employees who should not be made redundant were on leave as of October 3.

The Walt Disney Company reinstated its senior management salaries in late August, when thousands of cast members were still on leave.
