Pain. 2020 has suffered a lot for Penn State football fans. On Wednesday evening, the last body shot was delivered. The bodily blow came when James Franklin told reporters after Wednesday night’s practice that running back Journey Brown would no longer be able to play football.
Shortly after, Brown took to Twitter with a statement.
Before the start of the season, Franklin announced that Brown would be missing an unknown amount of time due to an undisclosed medical condition. Brown has now been diagnosed with hyperthrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart disease that causes heart muscle to become unusually thick. Due to this condition, Brown’s football career is now over.
2019 was a breakout campaign for Brown as he rushed for 819 yards and 12 touchdowns. That included a Penn State Bowl record of 202 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns in the team’s Cotton Bowl victory over Memphis. This performance earned Brown Cotton Bowl Offensive MVP honors.
Heading into the 2020 season, Brown was in the conversation to be the best running back in the country. Penn State’s offense was going to be built around a running game led by him, and Brown was set to be the first runner selected in the NFL Draft in April.
No pun intended, your heart must break for Brown. The youngster, who has been an excellent representation of Penn State on and off the field, was poised to make money for himself and his family. Football is no longer an option for him now.
Hopefully Brown will continue to find nothing but success in whatever comes next for him in life.
