According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Rockets’ superstar duo are at a crossroads, with James Harden “locked up” for the season and Russell Westbrook wanting to leave Houston.
Shams posted this tweet at 6:11 p.m. Houston time and we thought it was the end of the Rockets as we know them.
However, another tweet from Shams raised us again by signaling that Harden wants to leave Houston.
It’s certainly a surprise given that many of us in Red Nation developed the understanding that Harden and Westbrook were BFFs and that Harden pushed Westbrook to come here.
After only one season, Westbrook wants out. It won’t be easy to get a trade for him and his value is dropping drastically now with the announcement of his trade request.
Tomorrow, Westbrook will be 32 and still has a salary that pays him north of $ 130 million over the next three seasons, although he may retire after 2022-23.
It’s a shame Westbrook’s experience seems to be over because, if Westbrook never plays for the Rockets again, the team would have fired two draft picks and wasted another year of Harden’s bonus.
The team also traded Clint Capela to the Hawks to ensure the team could better adapt to Westbrook’s style of play. It all seems to be for nothing.
The Dream Shake will continue to update this story as it develops.
