LOS ANGELES – Drew Brees was sidelined for the second time in 14 years as a quarterback for the New Orleans Saints.
Brees was replaced by Teddy Bridgewater at the end of the first quarter on Sunday, after his throwing right hand hit the Los Angeles Rams' defensive tackle's hand at the end of an incomplete pass. Brees had his right thumb and his lower hand / wrist glued by a coach on the bench. He remained on the sideline in uniform and was officially announced as suspected of returning with a hand injury.
Bridgewater finished the game for Brees, totaling 17 yards out of 30 for 165 yards in a 27-9 loss to the Rams.
Brees, 40, missed just one start because of an injury since high school – when he missed a match of the third week at Carolina Panthers in 2015 with an injury to the shoulder. He also suffered a serious shoulder injury in the last game of the 2005 season with the San Diego Chargers, but he returned in time for Week 1 with the Saints the following year.
Brees completed three of his first five passes before leaving the game on Sunday. He launched an interception that was ripped out of Jared Cook's hands when the disc was opened.
The Saints have one of the best league insurance policies in Bridgewater, which is the NFL's highest paid quarterback with $ 7.25 million this season. The Saints traded a third-round pick to acquire Bridgewater from the New York Jets following the 2018 preseason and re-signed for a one-year contract in March.
