Brett Gardner returns to Yankees in MLB Free Agency

TAMPA – After all that, Brett Gardner is still a Yankee.

Gardner and the Yankees have agreed to a one-year contract, a source said, that will bring the left-back to the Bronx, less than a week before players in position are due to show up for spring training.

Gardner, 37, has been among the free agent veterans unable to strike a deal this offseason, and although manager Aaron Boone has said Clint Frazier is the Yankees’ starting left-back and the team have added some depth from field to Greg Allen, Jay Bruce and Derek Dietrich, a reunion with Gardner was never out of the question.

Asked Friday that Gardner was not in the Yankees “at this point,” Boone replied, “So far.”

On Wednesday, Boone said of Gardner’s status: “You never know what can or will happen. We’ll see.”

Gardner finished 2020 in a solid way, going 13 for 33 with 1,190 OPS in his last 13 regular season games and was a big factor in the playoffs.

The Yankees’ 40-player roster is full and they’ve also struck a deal with southpaw Justin Wilson. Luis Severino, in rehabilitation after Tommy John’s surgery, may be placed on the 60-day injured list to open up a place, but the Yankees are expected to make yet another move.
