For a guy who did not know how he would fit in at the start of the year, Brett Gardner certainly found his place with the Yankees.
Gardner ended his series of three consecutive home games on Friday night, but he showed no sign of weakness as the Yankees entered the second half of their regular season with a 4-0 win over Canada. Blue Jays in the Bronx.
He doubled, tripled, scored and had a key assist from the left field. The performance was about the same for 35-year-old Gardner, who is poised to beat his lowest all-season exit rate, coupled with more extra-base success.
And he played twice as many games as any other Yankees player, with injuries in the unit.
"I introduce myself and do my job," said Gardner. "It does not matter where I play, where I play in training."
Gardner hit ninth on Friday and each of his last six wins has been for extra bases.
Giancarlo Stanton is far from returning from a knee injury and Clint Frazier stuck in the miners, Gardner is not likely to go anywhere.
"I knew somehow that I was enrolled," Gardner said about his state of mind before the season, when Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Aaron Judge – and perhaps even Frazier – were ready to take time.
"I mean, I was not sure what I had signed during the off season, but I knew it might be a different role," said Gardner. "Of course, I'm happy to be able to play, but when we are at full speed, we have a very dangerous team and wherever I am, I will be happy to be part of a winning team."
Will people become healthy? But like many others, Gardner has made the loss of so many fields tolerable.
On Friday, he started a four-point rally that put the Yankees in the top five with a triple in the right field line to lead the way. Gardner scored on DJ LeMahieu's pitch for the first leg of the game before the Yankees added three more goals to right-winger Aaron Sanchez.
A round later, Gardner scored a brace when he beat a long distance player after a stint from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in third place. Gardner, who played hard, played easily. His speed played a role again in the inning when Toronto catcher Danny Jansen tried to go behind Gardner to take second place, but his shot was centered, allowing Gardner to finish third. Gardner was stuck there when Aaron Judge ended the inning.
And when it seemed that the Blue Jays might have a chance to come back in the match in the seventh game, while Tommy Kahnle came in and gave consecutive singles to Cavan Biggio and Guerrero, Gardner made a powerful left shot to allow to Guerrero to take second place the first of the round.
