Brewers activate Christian Yelich from COVID list

The Brewers activated the outfielder Christian Yelich from the COVID-19 Injury List, Manager Craig Conseill told reporters (including Tom Haudricourt of Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). Yelich is not starting today’s game but is available on the bench, Counsell said.

Unfortunately for the Brewers, right-hander Adrien houser was officially placed on the COVID list today, as one would expect after the right-hander tested positive yesterday. Houser joins now Josh hader, Eric Lauer, Keston Hiura, Jandel Gustave, Strickland Hunter, and Jake cousins as Milwaukee players on the COVID roster, as the club continue to face an epidemic within the clubhouse. Yelich tested positive for the virus and was placed on COVID-IL on July 27, so he will return after a fairly minimal stint, although he does not immediately return to his regular duties for the Brewers.

Between that absence and two stints on the regular injured list due to back problems, Yelich has only appeared in 67 games this season and has reached a modest .235 / .382 / .367 in 275 appearances at home plate. While still above par (104 OPS +, 108 wRC +), that is certainly not what was expected of the former NL MVP, even though the Brewers jumped to the top spot of NL Central with only average typing numbers overall. A return to Yelich’s form could be the spark Milwaukee needs to cement itself as a World Series contender, although the first order of business is simply to get everyone back from the COVID outbreak.
