The Brewers Association today released its annual ranking of the best American brewers on the basis of expected sales volume for 2018.
Of the small and independent small brewery companies defined by BA, those producing less than 6 million barrels of beer per year and whose ownership is less than 25% owned by a non-artisanal brewer, Pennsylvania DG Yuengling & Son has again earned first place as the leading producer of craft beer in the United States.
The Boston Beer Company and Sierra Nevada Brewing ranked second and third, respectively, and the top seven ranked breweries remained unchanged from last year.
Canarchy Craft Brewery, comprised of Oskar Blues, Cigar City Brewing, Perrin Brewing, Utah Brewers Cooperative, Deep Ellum Brewing and Three Weavers Brewing, advanced from one place to eighth. Stone Brewing fell from one place to the ninth.
At the same time, Oregon's Deschutes brewery has retained its 10th place. In total, 16 of the 50 largest craft brewers maintained their positions, while six others took a place in advance.
As in previous years, a few outstanding companies have made significant gains.
The Rhinegeist of Cincinnati made the biggest leap forward last year, going 11 places (up from 28) in its ranking of 39th national brewery in 2017, according to statistics published in the May / June issue of BA's New Brewer Magazine.
"It's the most competitive market we've ever seen," Rhinegeist co-founder Bryant Goulding told Brewbound. "This certainly gives us the conviction that our double in our backyard, our self-distribution and our regional awareness and focus are critical."
According to Goulding, Rhinegeist did not open any new territory last year and its production has increased from 86,242 barrels in 2017 to 100,302 in 2018.
San Diego's Modern Times Beer, for its part, is in the top 50 for the first time, gaining 11 places, from 56th in 2017 to 45th in 2018.
The Georgetown Brewing Company of Seattle has also officially joined the top 50 for the first time with a clear improvement of nine positions (from 51st place in 2017 to 41st in 2018).

Of the top 50 producers, 15 companies lost ground, with Oregon's Full Sail Brewing being the most extreme, rising from 29th in 2017 to 44th in 2018.
Elsewhere, California's Bear Republic Brewing also lost seven spots, while Colorado's Left Hand Brewing and Uinta Utah each lost six spots.
For their part, the Maryland Flying Dog and Oregon's Rogue Ales also took a step back, dropping 5 and 4 places respectively.
